Guest Post: 10 Natural Summer Skincare Tips
Everyone knows that sunscreen is a must in summer. But did you know that your skin needs a totally different routine when the seasons change? No matter what your skin type, it’s important to take great care of it! It’s the largest organ in the body so it’s worth treating with respect. Here’s how to master perfect skincare this summer.
1. Pick The Right SPF
Let’s get this out the way first – sun protection is a must. Check that your sunscreen has an SPF of at least 30. Make sure it guards against both UV and UVB rays. Choose a safer option that isn’t laden with harmful chemicals. You will be applying it all over your body, so minimize your exposure to unnecessary additives.
Check that it’s waterproof, especially if you are going swimming. Reapply it at least every hour. Ideally, your sunscreen should contain zinc oxide. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your lips and ears.
2. Use A Lighter Moisturizer
According to skincare line designer and facialist Cecilia Wong, it’s important to choose a lighter moisturizer in the summer. This is because heavy products clog up your pores and can make your skin more prone to acne.
3. Mask Twice Per Week
Herb and clay-based masks are good choices for summer. They remove oil, sweat, makeup, and other debris from your pores. A high-quality facemask combined with a self-lymphatic drainage massage for the face detoxifies the skin and reduces the appearance of acne.
4. Avoid Retinoid
Skincare products with retinoid dry out your skin and leave it more prone to damage. They are best avoided in summer.
5) Keep On Cleansing
Cleanse twice a day during hot weather to clear out your pores. Look out for products that can break down oil. Pick a salicylic acid cleanser in humid weather – it will reduce sweat, build-up, and shine.
6. Apply A Safe Tan
Never use sunbeds or develop a natural tan. Remember, a tan is a sign of sun damage. Instead, use a good-quality fake tan or get a professional spray treatment. Remove body hair a couple of days before to give your pores enough time to close. Exfoliate and moisturizer regularly for an even finish.
If you are applying your own tan, using vinyl gloves prevents a streaky finish according to dermatologist Dr. Peggy Fuller. If you want to take a more conservative approach, use body makeup to get a golden glow.
7. Exfoliate Twice Per Week
Your pores become more clogged and visible in hot weather, so exfoliate often. This will slough off dead skin and maintain a radiant appearance. Make your skin look even better by wearing only light makeup. Cosmetics can clog pores, leaving your complexion looking dull and washed out.
8. If You Burn Treat It Quickly
The American Academy of Dermatology has a few tips to help you treat sunburn. The faster you act, the less damage your skin will take. Begin by placing a cool, damp cloth on your skin for around 15 minutes. Take cool showers or baths to minimize inflammation and pain.
Burnt skin is dry, so be sure to use moisturizer every day. Choose a formula that contains soya or aloe vera and is suitable for sensitive skin. Ask a pharmacist for advice on hydrocortisone cream and painkillers if you are in pain. Don’t pick at the blisters as this can lead to infection.
9. Drink Lots Of Water
There’s a good reason why this is one of the most popular beauty tips. Water keeps your skin looking fresh and plumped up, which is especially important in summer. Your skin is more likely to lose vitamins and minerals in the summer because you produce more sweat. Make hydration a priority.
10. Apply A Cool Washcloth
If your skin flushes easily, put a cool cloth over your face for ten minutes whenever you start to feel hot. This encourages the tiny blood vessels in your face to contract, countering the redness.
There you have it – that’s your summer skincare routine sorted! Great skin doesn’t happen by accident, but neither should it take much time or effort. With a bit of planning, you’ll be glowing all summer long.
